The Emory University Baseball Team made it a clean sweep at the
Emory Tournament on Monday, when the second-ranked Eagles picked up
a 12-3 win over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Atlanta,
Georgia.
The win boosts the Eagles' record to 3-0 to start the 2015
campaign, with a pair of the victories coming against teams that
made the NCAA Tournament last season, in Rhodes and St.
Joseph's. It marks the first 3-0 start for the Eagles since
the 2012 season, and the 10th in the program's
history.
St. Joseph's dropped to 0-3 on the campaign with the
loss.
Emory fell behind by a run in the top of the third innings, but
answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a
sacrifice fly from junior David Coble, which drove in
junior Jack Karras, who doubled earlier in the inning, and
again on a wild pitch with two outs. The Eagles tacked on
four more runs in the fourth inning, including a pair on a double
from Coble, to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
After the Monks cut the advantage to 6-2 in the top of the seventh,
the Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the inning with a
six-run effort, including a pair on a home run from Philip
Maldari, the second of his career and the first by an Eagle this
season. Sophomore catcher Chris Young drove in two
more runs with a double later in the inning.
St. Joseph's would add on another run in the ninth, but it would be
too little too late for the Monks, who suffered their third defeat
in as many days at the tournament.
Emory starter Jackson Weeg pitched six innings,
scattering seven hits and allowing just one run, while striking out
seven batters and walking a pair to earn the win.
Freshmen Matt Randolph and Danny Kerning each
pitched innings of relief out of the bullpen in their collegiate
debuts, while senior Graham Bloomsmith closed out the
game in the ninth.
Senior Brett Lake led the team with a three-for-five day
at the plate, including an RBI and a stolen base, while Coble ended
the day two-for-three with three RBIs and a pair of stolen
bases. Karras scored three runs and drove in one of his own
with a two-for-three performance, and seniors Wes
Peacock and Jordan Selbach each had two-hit days as
well.
