Emory Sweeps Chicago in Saturday Doubleheader

From Emory University Athletics

The 26th-ranked Emory University Eagles swept a doubleheader from the University of Chicago at Chappell Park on Saturday, claiming an 11-4 win in the early game, followed by a 10-1 victory in the late contest.

Emory raised its season record to 15-9 on the year with the two wins, while Chicago dropped to 2-8 with the pair of losses.

Sophomore third baseman Philip Maldari keyed the Eagles' offensive attack throughout the day, finishing the two games a combined six-for-nine with four doubles, five runs batted in, and three runs scored.  Senior first baseman Jordan Selbach added four RBIs over the two games, with junior Ben Vizvary added a three-for-three day with a double, three RBIs, and three walks.

Senior Connor Dillman started the early game for the Eagles, allowing three runs (just one earned) on six hits and five walks, while striking out a pair over six innings of work to earn the victory.  He improved to 4-3 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 3.24 for the campaign.

Emory and Chicago traded single runs through the first two innings, before the Eagles took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the third, including back-to-back RBI doubles from Vizvary and Maldari.  Emory broke the game open for good with a five-run sixth inning that included a two-RBI hit from Selbach.

Junior Tyler Sprague pitched a pair of scoreless innings, and freshman Rhett Stuart closed out the game in the ninth.  Starter Andrew VanWazer took the loss for the Maroons, falling to 0-2 on the year.

Emory got out to a quick start again in the second game, scoring three in the top of the first inning on RBIs from sophomore Brian Hernandez, Maldari and Selbach.  The score remained 3-0 until the fourth, when the Eagles added runs on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Chris Young and a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Wes Peacock.  Emory scored three more in the third, including one on Maldari's fourth double of the day, to take an 8-0 lead over Chicago.

Meanwhile, sophomore southpaw Jackson Weeg was stellar again on the mound, surrendering just one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings to the Maroons, while striking out six batters.  Weeg would earn the win in the game to improve to 6-1, while lowering his ERA to 1.77.

Emory added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 10-1 lead, and senior Graham Bloomsmith pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game.  He struck out five batters in his outing, including all three batters he faced in the ninth innings.

Hernandez scored three runs in the second game, going two-for-four with a double and an RBI, while Vizvary added a pair of RBIs after coming off the bench in the contest.  Starter Thomas Prescott took the loss for Chicago, allowing seven runs in four innings to fall to 1-1 in 2015.

Despite both teams being members of the University Athletic Association, Saturday's games were the first two between the teams since the 1995 campaign.  Emory improved to 7-0 all-time against the Maroons.
