NYU Bests Maritime 9-1 at Home

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated Maritime College 9-1 at home on Wednesday night, April 22, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

The Violets (16-19) began with a three-run offensive spurt in the home half of the first inning and never trailed the Privateers (11-15) at any point en route to the eight-run victory.

Jarret Weiss started the game for NYU and picked up his third victory of the season. The sophomore struck out one over 6.0 innings, scattered three hits and allowed just one run.

"Jarret did a great job after the first two innings of getting and staying ahead of their hitters," said NYU Head Coach Dioug Kimbler. "We played well on defense despite a few errors. We pitched well enough to win and that big fifth-inning was key for us."

With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the first, Michael Vokulich knocked an RBI double to left. Scott Hilbrandt follwed with a two-RBI double to left of his own to put NYU up 3-0. Maritime would get one back in the next half inning, but the Violets led 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth.

Helped by a pair of Privateer errors, the Violets would plate six more runs to take a 9-1 lead. Vokulich began the scoring with another RBI double to score Jonathan Iaione. David Wagner was the next Violet to contribute, as the rookie rightfielder notched an RBI single with runners on second and third. A few pitches later, Wagner stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, while Hilbrandt scored from third at the same time. Adrian Spitz would later collect an RBI single, followed two at-bats later by a two-RBI single from CJ Picerni to complete the scoring.

"Our guys did a great job staying ahead of their pitches and hit well with runners in scoring position," continued Kimbler.
