Chicago Wins 5-3 at Edgewood

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago baseball team took advantage of several miscues to defeat Edgewood College 5-3 on Monday.

The Maroons improved to 18-17 and the Eagles fell to 18-22. The two teams met previously on April 8 and UChicago won 12-7 at home.

UChicago loaded the bases in the top of the third inning and scored its first run on junior designated hitter Kevin Tully's fielder's choice. On the play, a throwing error scored another run to make it 2-0.

An error helped the Maroons again in the top of the fifth. Senior second baseman William Katzka singled and senior third baseman Kyle Engel scored on another error on the relay throw.

Edgewood got onto the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fifth via bunt single. Another RBI single in the sixth cut the deficit to 3-2. However, UChicago gave itself some needed insurance runs in the eighth inning. Sophomore outfielder Nicholas Toomey plated one with a RBI sacrifice fly and Engel knocked a RBI double – his 25th of the season – down the left field line.

The Eagles made it 5-3 in their half of the eighth with a single, but that was as close as the home team would get. Freshman pitcher Michael Davis closed down the ninth inning to earn his first collegiate save.

Davis wrapped up solid pitching performances from the UChicago staff. Junior Nick Watson got the win to improve his season record to 5-2. Watson tossed the opening six innings with two runs, eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Senior Andrew VanWazer followed with one inning of relief that included one run, one hit, two walks and one strikeout. Senior Simon Swanson allowed one hit in his one inning of work. Davis walked one and struck out one in the ninth inning.

UChicago posted seven hits and one error on the day. Freshman outfielder Max Larsen went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the offense.
