Brendan Garry's Walk-Off Hands #9 Emory First UAA Loss

From University of Rochester Athletics

Senior Brendan Garry singled home Matt Todd in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the University of Rochester to a 3-2 extra inning victory over #9 Emory University at the UAA Baseball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Sanford Memorial Stadium.

Rochester (2-3, 2-3 UAA) hands Emory (10-4, 4-1 UAA) its first conference loss and snaps a three game losing streak to the Eagles.

The game was very well pitched on both sides, including starters John Ghyzel for Rochester and Emory's Paul Merolla.  Ghyzel fired six innings in his first collegiate start, scattering 7 hits, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out 6 and walking 3.  His counterpart on the mound went 7 2/3 innings, allowed just 4 hits, 2 runs (0 earned) and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.  Both earned a no-decision.

Michael Mondon pitched a scoreless seventh for UR and closer Evan Janifer (1-0) threw three innings of relief, allowing just two hits in picking up his first victory of the year.  Kyle Monk (0-1) took the loss for Emory, pitching two innings and allowing just the Garry single and RBI in his outing.

Emory was able to get on the scoreboard first, plating an unearned run in the top of the first inning.  After reaching on an E5, David Coble came around to score on a Wes Peacock single to left.

Ghyzel would settle in after the first inning, striking out five straight batters in the 2nd and 3rd frames.

The Yellowjackets responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs to grab an early lead.  Brian Munoz led off with a single.  He would reach third when Dan Warren grounded into a fielders choice that was thrown away at 2nd base.  Sam Slutsky then performed a safety squeeze to get UR on the board, eventually reaching base when the bunt was thrown over the first baseman's head.  Warren then reached home when Josh Ludwig grounded out with the bases loaded, putting UR up 2-1.

In the fourth, Emory would even up the score with a Ben Vizvary double to right field, scoring Jordan Selbach.

After UR's runs in the second, Merolla would face the minimum over four of the next five innings, keeping the game tied at 2-2.  Rochester's Ghyzel and Mondon kept it that way as well, stranding numerous Eagles on the bases.  For the game, Emory left 11 runners on base.

Munoz led Rochester at the plate, going 2-4 with a run scored.  Ludwig was 1-5 with a double, RBI and a stolen base.  Emory's Peacock and Nick Chambers each had two hits on the day while eight of the nine starters recorded a base hit.
