Win Streak Reaches 14 After Rochester Rally vs. Ithaca

From University of Rochester Athletics

After going through six innings of missed chances, Rochester erupted to score four runs on four hits and a walk in the eighth inning and upended Ithaca College, 5-4.

The Yellowjackets won their 14th straight game and improved to 19-7. The run ties the longest such winning streak in school history, set back in 2008.  Ithaca, which was playing its first home game of the season, slipped just under .500 at 8-9.

Brian Munoz drove in two runs in the eighth. His bases loaded single put Rochester ahead to stay and Evan Janifer pitched 1.2 innings of one hit relief with two strikeouts to seal the victory. Ethan McGowan, the fourth pitcher used, picked up the win in relief.

The Yellowjackets made big plays all over the field. In the eighth inning, Ithaca got the first two runners aboard and had second and third with no outs against Grant Petito. He got Cooper Belyeac to send a twisting foul down the first base line. Rochester's Josh Ludwig dove full length to catch it for the first out. Janifer came in. He caught Josh Savacool looking at strike three for the second out. Pinch-hitter John Stanley drove the ball into left field but Sam Slutsky made a diving catch in the outfield to end the inning.

In the ninth, Janifer retired the first two, gave up a single, then ended the game on an infield popup.

Rochester's big eighth inning started with Lance Hamilton. He swung and missed at strike three, but the pitch was wild and Hamilton managed to reach first. Sam Steele bunted him to second. Jake Meyerson, who finished with four hits, singled to put runners at the corners. That brought Ludwig to the plate. He drove in Rochester's first run with an RBI double in the fourth, cutting the Ithaca lead to 3-1 at the time. Ludwig singled through the right side, scoring Hamilton and Meyerson reached second.

Tyler Schmidt struck out, giving the Bombers some hope they could escape without further damage. Steve Eychner singled to left, bringing home Meyerson and cutting the lead to 4-3. Slutsky walked, loading the bases. Munoz singled to right, scoring Ludwig and Eychner and moving Slutsky to third.

Over the first six innings, the Yellowjackets stranded seven men in scoring position. Ithaca nibbled for a run in the second against Luke Meyerson, the second Yellowjacket hurler. The Bombers loaded the bases with no outs, but Meyerson induced two infield flyouts. Savacool singled for one run. In the Bomber  third, Matt Connolly hit a two-run single to push the hosts up, 3-0.

Six Rochester pitchers scattered 12 hits, walked three, and struck out five. Ithaca used three men on the hill. The loss went to Jimmy Wagner, the third IC pitcher.
