Shutout, Walk-Off Highlight Rochester Sweep of St. Lawrence

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester's Evan Janifer tossed his first career shutout in game one and UR then won an extra-inning thriller in game two to complete a weekend sweep of St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.

The Yellowjackets (13-7, 7-1 Liberty League) won game one 3-0 and then took the nightcap 7-6 in 12 innings to compete a four-game sweep of the Saints (8-8, 4-7 Liberty League).

Janifer was strong on the mound for UR in the opener, tossing a 7-inning complete game, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts.  It was the preseason All-American closer's 2nd career start and ended in his 3rd victory of the season.  His opposition on the hill was Andrew Schreyack who also went the distance, throwing 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Rochester's scoring was done in the 3rd and 6th innings.  In the 3rd, Sam Slutsky led off with a single.  He was bunted to 2nd by Brian Munoz and advanced to 3rd on a Nolan Schultz groundout.  Lance Hamilton singled to right, scoring a run.  After Hamilton stole second, Brendan Garry reached on a SLU error and Hamilton was able to score giving UR a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Munoz singled in Slutsky with two outs to complete the scoring.  Slutsky finished 2-4 with 2 runs while Munoz was 2-3 with an RBI in game one.

The second game of the doubleheader saw Rochester rally three times to tie the score, forcing extra innings.  UR tied it at 1-1 in the 2nd, 4-4 in the 7th and 6-6 in the 9th before winning it on a St. Lawrence error in the 12th inning.

SLU got on the board first with an RBI groundout from Kyle MacDonald.  Rochester would score a run in the second after Tyler Schmidt doubled in Garry.

The Saints would build a 3-1 lead after Kyle Liszewski and Mic Regan each provided RBI singles in the 3rd.  UR would answer with a single run in the bottom of the frame when Munoz tripled down the right field line, scoring Matt Todd.  The hit extended Munoz's streak of reaching safely to 20 games to start the year.

In the 7th, St. Lawrence would tack on another run when Schreyack hit a solo home run to right field through the snowflakes that began to fall.  Slutsky then singled in a run in the bottom of the inning and was promptly driven in by a Munoz double to even the score at 4-4 after seven innings.

St. Lawrence would re-take the lead in the 8th after Michael LeFevre tripled in Isaac Lewis and add to the margin with a single run in the 9th on a Chris Fernandez RBI groundout.

The bottom of the 9th saw UR again rally, scoring on a pinch hit sac fly from Josh Ludwig and then a 2-out single through the right side from Schmidt.  Ludwig's fly scored Munoz and Schmidt's base hit scored Schultz who each led off the inning with singles.

The Yellowjackets nearly ended it in the 10th. With one out and Jake Meyerson on 2nd, Slutsky singled up the middle, but Meyerson was hosed at the plate by SLU centerfielder Regan.

In the 12th, UR got its game winner when Munoz hit a grounder to short that was bobbled, allowing Jake Meyerson to scamper home.

Meyerson finished game two 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.  Munoz, Slutsky and Garry each had three hit performances while Schmidt and Munoz each had two RBI's.

For the Saints, Mark Syron went 4-6 at the plate.  Liszewski and Regan each had three hits and an RBI while Lewis and Schreyack each scored twice.

On the hill, UR starter John Ghyzel went 3 innings and gave up 5 hits and 3 runs.  Rob Mabee went 4 innings of relief, only allowing one run.  Ethan McGowan and Luke Meyerson each gave up a run from the bullpen as well.  Grant Petito got some late inning work going 2.2 scoreless innings and freshman Michael Lee picked up his first college win throwing a zero in the 12th.

SLU starter Jake Farrell went 6 innings, allowed 9 hits and 3 runs with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.  Ben Jenkins allowed a run and Liam Rogers gave up two before Frank Grady allowed an unearned run to take the loss in the 12th.
