Brandeis Extends Winning Streak to Six by Topping Eastern Connecticut State, 16-6

From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis University baseball team sent 13 men to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring a season-high nine runs in the frame, as the Judges defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 16-6, in a non-conference matchup on Stein Diamond. The win is the Judges' sixth in a row and improves them to 14-15-1 on the season. The loss drops ECSU to 14-10.

STREAKING JUDGES

  • Brandeis's win streak is their longest since 2003, when they won seven in a row.
  • The 14 win plateau surpasses the squad's win total from each of the past two seasons.
  • The Judges improved to 6-1 on Stein Diamond under head coach Derek Carlson '91.
  • This was the first meeting between Brandeis and ECSU since 2003.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Each team scored a run in the first inning – ECSU on an errant throw on a steal of second with runners on the corners that allowed Chad Adams (Ware, Mass./Willston Northampton) to score from third, Brandeis on a Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) sacrifice fly.
  • The Warriors went ahead in the top of the third on an Alex Zachary (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) home run to dead center field. It was his team-leading fifth of the season.
  • Heineman tied the game up with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame, while Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) gave Brandeis the lead for good with a sac fly of his own.
  • The Judges went up 4-2 in the fourth, when senior Max Hart (Montville, Conn./Montville) tripled with two out and scored on a Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) single.
  • The game broke wide open in the fifth, as the first six Judges singled, producing three runs.
  • After Eastern Conn. got a strikeout with the bases loaded for the first out of the inning, Schaff bounced one through the left side of the infield to drive in two more.
  • After the ninth batter of the inning, senior Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon), singled to load the bases again, rookie Ben Bavly (Newton, Mass./Newton South) drilled his team-leading third home run of the season to right field for a grand slam.
  • Zachary drove in two more runs for ECSU in the sixth inning with a two-out single.
