Greg Heineman Lifts Judges Past NYU, 7-6, in 11 Innings

From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis baseball team picked up its second University Athletic Association win on Saturday when the Judges defeated NYU, 7-6, in 11 innings on a walk-off hit by senior Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional). The Judges also closed out the UAA tournament with a 9-3 loss to Emory on Sunday. The Judges tied for fifth place in the UAA with a 2-6 league mark, 5-6 overall.

VS NYU

  • The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first six innings, with 10 of the 12 at-bats resulting in runs scored.
  • NYU opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Colman Hendershot RBI.
  •  Brandeis answered with two in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a couple of Violet errors in the running game. After Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon) singled to lead off, he moved to third on an errant pickoff.
  • Rookie Benjamin Bavly (Newton, Mass./Newton South) followed with a walk. He stole second, and O'Connor scored when the throw down sailed into center field.
  • Heineman gave Brandeis the lead for the first time with an RBI single up the middle.
  • After a scoreless second, NYU took a 3-2 lead on a CJ Picerni two-run double.
  • A single and two errors loaded the bases for the Judges in the bottom of the third, and senior Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) tied the game with a single back through the box.
  • The Violets got a pop-up and a double play ball to avoid further damage.
  • In the fourth, Jack Walter doubled in a run for NYU, but O'Connor answered with an RBI single that followed another failed pickoff by the Violets.
  • In the fifth, Jonathan Iaione put New York on top, but senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) blasted a one-out homer to left.
  • It was Doyle's first blast of the season and the third of his career.
  • NYU went ahead again in the sixth on an Adrian Spitz single.
  • The Judges responded again as Bavly tripled with one out and scored on a Heineman grounder to short.
  • After an unremarkable seventh inning, Bavly laced a two-out shot to centerfield. He reached third safely but tried to stretch it to an inside-the-park home and was gunned down at the plate.
  • In the ninth, NYU put a runner on second with two away. Brandeis coach Derek Carlson summoned Healy in from right field and he got a pop-up to end the inning.
  • Healy doubled with one out in the bottom of the frame, and after a low throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, the Judges had runners on first and second. The Violets atoned for the error by turning a 4-6-3 double play.
  • The 10th and top of the 11th went quietly before the Judges earned the win in the 11th.
  • With one out, Bavly doubled, his fourth hit and third for extra bases on the day. Heineman followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle to give the Judges the win.
  • The offensive stars were Heineman (2-6, 3 RBI, game-winner); Bavly (4-5, 3 R, 2B, 2 3B, SB) and Healy (4-5, RBI).
  • Healy also earned the win after allowing just one hit in the final 2.1 innings of the game.

VS EMORY

  • The Judges and Eagles were tied at 2 after four innings thanks to another RBI by Heineman and a solo home run by Healy.
  • Healy's second career round-tripper came in the bottom of the fourth and tied the score.
  • Emory responded by batting around in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batter.
  • They added two more in the sixth on just one hit, thanks to two hit batters, a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.
  • Brandeis left the bases loaded in the seventh, but got a run in the eighth when Heineman legged out his third career triple and scored on a Max Hart(Montville, Conn./Montville) groundout.
  • Judge senior Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on only five hits, but he walked three and hit a batter. Miller struck out three and falls to 1-2 on the season.
  • Heineman went 4-4 with a triple a run scored and an RBI. He accounted for four of the Judges 10 hits.
  • O'Connor was the only other multiple hitter for the Judges, going 2-3.
  • Senior Cam Shaw (E. Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and junior Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Westfield Acad.) each doubled.

  • Heineman also finished third in the conference with eight RBI.
