Emory Snaps Two-Game Skid with 3-2 Win over CWRU

From Emory University Athletics

The no.3-ranked Emory University baseball team snapped their two-game losing skid with a 3-2 victory over Case Western Reserve on Friday night at Sanford Memorial Stadium. Emory improves to 4-3 in conference play and tied for second in the UAA standings with one day remaining. The Eagles can still clinch a share of the UAA Championship with a victory over a Brandeis on Sunday and a Washington University loss to NYU.

Junior righthander Hans Hansen stayed perfect on the season, moving to 4-0 with 7.2 innings of two-run ball. Hansen threw exactly 100 pitches in the outing, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out four.

Emory scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning due to some defensive miscues by the Spartans. The Eagles first tied the game at 1-1 as senior David Coble beat out the return throw to first on a fielder's choice with sophomore Nick Chambers scoring on the play. Later in the frame, sophomore Bubby Terp came home a wild pitch to give Emory a 2-1 lead and Coble scored the third run in the inning on a throwing error by the CWRU catcher.

The teams traded zeroes until Case Western Reserve built a rally in the top of the eighth. Hansen sent down the first two batters he faced but Daniel Watson doubled down the left field line and scored on a single to right by Tony Damiano which cut the Emory lead to 3-2. Junior closer Kyle Monk was called upon for the final out in the inning and after a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Damiano to reach third Monk retired Mike Najmowicz for end the eighth.

The Eagles had a chance to pad their lead in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded and just one out but CWRU pitcher Connor Tagg was able to get sophomores Mitch Kerner and Terp out on a strikeout and ground out to end the scoring threat.

Monk made quick work of the Spartans in the ninth, sending them down in order to seal the victory for Emory. Monk now has seven saves on the season in 12 appearances and is tied for the nation's lead in that category.
