Emory Takes Saturday DH from N.C. Wesleyan to Push Win Streak to Six

From Emory University Athletics

The #5/7 Emory University baseball program swept the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops on Saturday 5-1 and 17-7. The Eagles have now won six straight games and sit 19 games above .500 at 26-7 overall. N.C. Wesleyan has now lost five consecutive contests and are 22-15 on the season.

Game 1 – Emory 5, N.C. Wesleyan 1

Junior Jackson Weeg won his sixth game of the season to improve to an unblemished mark of 6-0. He has now won 13 straight decisions dating back to last season and moves into sole possession of eighth place all-time with 22 career victories. Weeg worked 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He punched out six in the game and walked two.

Weeg departed with the bases loaded in the seventh as closer Kyle Monk came on in relief. Monk needed just two pitches to get out of the seventh inning jam before pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to pick up his 11th save of the season, tying the program's single season save record he set last season. Monk also moved into a tie for sixth place all-time in NCAA Division III history with his 29th career save.

Juniors Philip Maldari and Chris Young drove in four of Emory's five runs to lead the offense. Maldari began the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two out single to center to plate classmates Brian Hernandez and Wilson Morgan. The Eagles added a run in the second as senior David Coble had a single up to the middle to score senior Chris Slivka from second. Young provided the insurance runs in the fourth with a double to left center to bring home Slivka and senior Ben Vizvary.

Game 2 – Emory 17, N.C. Wesleyan 7 (7 inn.)

The Eagles had their highest scoring output of the season, scoring at least one run in all six innings en route to the 10-run victory. 11 batters drove in at least one run with five Eagles: sophomore Nick Chambers, Morgan, freshman Thomas Baumgartner, Slivka and sophomore Bubby Terp all driving in two runs to pace the Emory offense.

Maldari began the scoring with another run scoring hit in the first inning as his single through the left side plated Morgan. The Eagles scored two more times in the second as Chambers hustled out an inside-the-park home run as his liner sailed over the centerfielder's head and all the way to the right center wall.

After N.C. Wesleyan cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the third, Emory broke open the game scoring six times in the bottom half of the inning. Slivka crushed an Andrew Franklin offering over the left field fence for his third round tripper of the year. Later in the frame, Morgan hit a double to left which scored freshman Jackson Grayson and sophomore Mitch Kerner. Hernandez picked up a sac fly in the inning, scoring Chambers to make it 8-1 and Eisner followed with a sharp single to right to score Morgan.

The Battling Bishops answered with three unearned runs off junior Hans Hansen in the fourth inning to make it 9-4. However, the Eagles responded with two of the their own as Terp hit the third homer of the contest and the first of his career, a long two-run shot to left center, for Emory in the bottom of the inning.

In the fifth, Emory scored four more times to make it 15-4 with the big blow coming off Baumgartner's bat. The rookie drilled one to deep left to bring home freshmen Josh Rosenblatt and David Draper for his first two career RBI. Freshman Sam Brzowski also collected a run batted in in the frame with a sac fly to score Baumgartner.

N.C. Wesleyan made it 15-7 in the sixth scoring three times off sophomore Danny Kerning but once again Emory had an answer as freshmen NJ Kim and Eric Terry both earned their first RBI of their careers to provide the final margin.

Hansen tossed five innings in the outing, giving up four runs (1 ER) on six hits to win his team-leading seventh game of the season. Hansen struck out just two batters and walked three and is now 7-1 on the campaign. Freshman Charlie Redovian pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his first career appearance to close out the game. He had one strikeout and issued one free pass.
