NYU Tops CCNY Behind Solid Pitching

NYU Tops CCNY Behind Solid Pitching

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated the City College of New York 2-0 at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, on Friday, April 1.

"It was not a banner day offensively for us, but our pitchers stepped up and carried the load when they had to," said NYU Assistant Coach Jake Chaplin.

NYU (8-13) pitchers combined for nine shutout innings as the Beavers (3-22) managed just five hits.

Cameron Serapilio-Frank went 7.0 innings for the Violets in the victory. The sophomore right-hander gave up five hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

"Cam set the tone for the day from the very first pitch," continued Chaplin. "He was efficient and was an example of what we have been preaching to our guys all season -- attack hitters and be aggressive in the strike zone."

The Violets took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jonathan Iaione reached on a one-out triple to left-center. Then, with two outs, Andrew Cilento notched his first career RBI with a single up the middle to plate his fellow infielder.

NYU took a two-run lead in the home half of the fifth. Jack Walter reached base on a one-out single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the CCNY pitcher. Ryan McLaughlin was the next Violet at the plate and the rookie knocked in Walter with an RBI single to right.

Jack Kurtenbach struck out two in the eighth inning to pick up the hold. Matthew Millus came in for the ninth and picked up his fourth save of the season. The sophomore closer struck out two CCNY batters, as well.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- McLaughlin was 2-for-2 with an RBI, a walk, a steal, and was hit by a pitch.

- Cilento was 1-for-3 with a RBI and stolen base.

- Iaione was 1-for-3 with a run, a triple and a stolen base.

- Walter was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

"Going into tomorrow, we are going to be looking for a little more well-rounded performance," said Chaplin. "We need to be better."
