NYU Bests CCNY 10-2 on Senior Day

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated the City College of New York 10-2 on Saturday afternoon, April 2, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

Prior to the game, there was a ceremony honor NYU's graduating seniors CJ Picerni, Adrian Spitz and Jacob Bader.

"My hats are off to those guys who are leaving this program," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "Those three really brough something special and they will be missed."

Chase Denison was on the bump to start for the Violets (9-13). The sophomore left-hander went 7.0 innings for his first win of the season. He gave up two unearned runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

"The game is built on pitching, and a strong performance by Chase is what really got us rolling," continued Kimbler.

The Beavers (3-23) jumped ahead early as they put up two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Denison got two quick outs to start, but a trio of errors led to CCNY's 2-0 lead heading into the home half.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the third inning as the Violets finally broke through. With two outs and the bases loaded, Colman Hendershot reached on an error in rightfield -- a dropped fly ball -- and eventually made his way to second on the play. Ryan McLuaghlin and Jack Walter scored on the play. The following at-bat saw Jake Smith notch two RBIs on a base-hit up the middle to plate Hendershot and Spitz. Smith would be thrown out in a rundown between first and second to end the inning.

NYU came back with another big inning in the fifth. Spitz kicked it off with a one-out triple to left and scored in the following at-bat thanks to an RBI-single from Hendershot. Smith followed with another single to put runners on the corners. During Picerni's at-bat, Smith got caught in another rundown, but Hendershot stole home during. Smith was able to get into second safely on the throw for the double-steal. Later in the at-bat, Smith stole second and scored on an errant throw by the CCNY catcher. NYU ended the inning ahead 7-2.

The Violets pushed one more accross in the home half of the sixth. With one out and runners on second and third, McLaughlin reached on another misplayed fly ball to right. Iaione was able to score on the play. Then, in the seventh, NYU put up another two runs. First, Iaione reached on an error by the Beavers' third baseman. The following at-bat saw Jack Elias notch an RBI-groundout to put the Violets up 10-2.

"We took advantage of a few errors today and played a good ball game," Kimbler said.
