Pair Added to NYU Coaching Staff

From NYU Athletics

Chris Bayer and Jake Chaplin have been hired as assistant coaches for the New York University baseball program. Bayer will be working with NYU's pitching staff, while Chaplin will assist the squad's infielders and be involved with all aspects of the team's offense.

Both Bayer and Chaplin bring extensive baseball expertise to NYU.

Bayer most recently served as pitching coach of the New York Red Birds of the North Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League during the 2014 season.

A 1985 draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, Bayer played professionally as a member of the Red Sox and New York Mets' minor league systems for four seasons. Before being drafted, Bayer was a member of the Pace University baseball program from 1982-85.

Apart from baseball, Bayer worked as an interest rate option broker for Tullett Prebon Americas Corporation from 1992-2010 and then as a Senior Vice President at Vyapar Capital Markets Partners from 2010-13.

"Coach Bayer has a very professional and quiet demeanor and will assist in all aspects of the pitching staff," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "I am confident that he will keep our pitchers calm and help them gain poise in their abilities to throw in all situations. He will help our pitchers in ways that are a necessity for a new program like ours to get to that next level."

A 1991 graduate of Pace with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, Bayer is a native of West Islip, NY, and a resident of Merrick, NY.

Prior to his arrival at NYU, Chaplin served as an assistant coach for the Haverford College baseball program from 2013-14. He has also been involved in youth baseball in New York City in many different capacities throughout the years.

A 2012 graduate of Haverford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion, Chaplin was a four-year starter on the Fords' baseball team and a three-time All-Centennial Conference selection.

Following his collegiate career, Chaplin was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers and played for two seasons in their minor league system (2012-13).

"Jake brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program, having attended an academically-driven school like Haverford while also playing baseball there. His experience will be valuable to our coaches and players," said Kimbler. "Having played in the Dodgers' system, he brings a great amount of professional experience that will be useful when he works with the players, whether it's during infield practice or in the batting cages."

Chaplin is a native and resident of New York City.
