Jake Shields of CWRU Selected to ABCA All-Region Team

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University junior pitcher Jake Shields was named to the Mideast-American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Region Third Team, following his standout performance on the mound during the 2016 campaign.

It marked the second-straight season that Shields has received a berth to the all-region team, after earning third team honors during the 2015 campaign as well.  The right-handed pitcher is also a two-time All-University Athletic Association Second Team selection, having earned the honor during both his sophomore and junior campaigns.

Shields made 10 starts and appeared in 15 games, finishing the year with an 8-3 record and a 3.84 earned run average.  He threw 75.0 innings, striking out 45 batters and walking just 23, while holding the opposition to a .276 batting average.  Shields's eight victories matched the program's single-season records, set four times previously.  In addition, he picked up a pair of complete-game wins during the year, including one during a 6-1 Spartan victory over John Carroll University during the team's annual game at Progressive Field.

For his career, Shields is 18-7 with a 3.25 ERA.  He ended his junior year just six wins shy of the program's career record.

Shields and the Spartans finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 26-15.  The team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in the program's history, and the third time in the last four seasons.
