CWRU Pitcher Connor Tagg Named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Team

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University senior relief pitcher Connor Tagg (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield)  was named to the Academic All-America Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America, for both his success both athletically and academically during the 2016 season and over his career.

Tagg becomes the fifth member in the history of the Case Western Reserve baseball team to be named an Academic All-American, and the fourth in the last three years.  He joins infielder Tom Mager (1997 First Team), pitcher John Fortunado (2014 First Team), infielder Andrew Frey (2014 Second Team), and infielder Kerrigan Cain (2015 First Team) as Spartans to have won the award.

He is also the fifth CWRU athlete to be named an Academic All-American this academic year, and the 91st in the history of Case Western Reserve athletics.

Tagg was the top arm out of the bullpen for the Spartans during 2016 regular season, appearing in relief in 14 games and pitching 27.0 innings.  The right-handed pitcher went 2-1 during the year with one save and a 0.67 earned run average, while striking out 25 batters, walking just 14, and holding opponents to a .174 batting average.  Earlier in the season, he was named to the University Athletic Association All-Tournament Team, after pitching in four of the eight CWRU games at the conference tournament, recording a save and allowing just one run in 10 innings of work.

During his four-year career as a Spartan, Tagg has gone 8-2 with one save and a 3.14 ERA over 83.0 innings.

Academically, Tagg is a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree, and has recorded a 3.963 grade point average as a Mechanical Engineering major.

The Spartans completed a 26-15 season in 2016, earning their third bid to the NCAA Division III Championships in the last four years.
