Ryan Krob’s RBI Single Gives Maroons 5-4 Win Over Lewis in Extra Innings

From University of Chicago Athletics

Junior shortstop Ryan Krob delivered the game-winning single in the top of the 11th inning as the University of Chicago baseball team earned a dramatic 5-4 victory under the lights at Lewis University on Tuesday evening.

The Maroons (10-8 record) won their fourth-straight game while the Flyers fell to 17-11.

UChicago called upon eight different pitchers to throw at least an inning with senior Nick Watson (2 IP), junior Thomas Prescott (1 IP), sophomore Michael Davis (2 IP) and freshmen Ravi Bakhai (2 IP), Isaac Johnston (1 IP) and Alex McGimpsey (1 IP) all turning in scoreless frames. Davis earned his first win of the season.

The visitors had 12 hits, led by freshman outfielder Josh Parks who went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Freshman catcher Ian Bohn went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Krob was 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Lewis put its first three batters on base and scored twice via fielder's choice and sacrifice fly. UChicago sliced into the advantage in the top of the third when junior designated hitter Nicholas Toomey doubled down the left field line to bring in the runner from third base. The Maroons then loaded the bases in the fifth inning with two outs for Bohn. The freshman came through with a two-run single to right field, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead over their NCAA Division II opponent.

The home side tied the game back up at 3-3 in the seventh and the score remained deadlocked through the ninth inning to force extras. In the top of the 10th, Krob walked and was bunted over to second base to get into scoring position. Parks came to the plate with two outs and stroked a double to center field to plate Krob with the go-ahead run.

The Maroons looked primed to earn the victory with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but a throwing error scored the tying run to extend the game once again. Undeterred, UChicago put the leadoff man on base again in the 11th and moved him to third base with a pair of grounders. Krob singled to center field for the RBI and a 5-4 lead.

UChicago gave the ball to McGimpsey in the 11th and he delivered the three-out save, stranding the tying run on third base after a comebacker to the mound. It was his second save of the season.
