Maroons Explode For 11-2 Win at Washington

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago baseball team bounced back from doubleheader losses the previous day to blow past Washington University-St. Louis 11-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Maroons to 11-10 on the year while dropping the Bears to 22-13.

Senior Lucas Friss continued his stellar season on the mound by throwing eight sterling innings while also receiving plenty of runs in support. The senior righthander struck out nine batters while only allowing two runs, two walks and six hits. Now at 4-2 on the year, Friss recorded his fourth start of at least seven innings this season. Sophomore Michael Davis stepped in to close out the game in the ninth inning, striking out one.

The Maroons had 15 hits and frequently capitalized when runners were in scoring position. Freshman outfielder Josh Parks posted another three-hit day (3-for-5, three RBI), as five other Maroons added two hits apiece. Senior third basemen Tim Sonnefeldt smacked two doubles and delivered a game-high four RBI. The other players with multiple hits included freshman outfielder Connor Hickey, freshman catcher Ian Bohn (one RBI), junior shortstop Ryan Krob (one RBI) and Davis (one RBI).

Both offenses remained scoreless through three innings of baseball. But in their half of the fourth, the Maroons threw up a crooked number on the scoreboard. With one out, Davis singled and then got himself into scoring position on a throwing error. Krob then singled to put men at the corners. With Parks' lineup spot due up, the freshman came through with an RBI single to score Davis. Sonnefeldt followed Parks up with a two-run double down the left field line to give the Maroons a 3-0 early lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears got two runs back via home run. That was all the home side would get as Friss improved as the game went on, allowing a mere two hits until his exit. As for the Maroon offense, the scoring kept coming with three more multi-run innings which occurred in the fifth, seventh and ninth.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, a double-play ball scored one run and Krob knocked in another with a single to center. In the seventh, Bohn grounded out to plate a runner from third base. Davis followed with a RBI double and Parks brought him around with a single to left center.

The scoring concluded in the top of the ninth. Parks knocked another RBI single and Sonnefeldt drove in two with a pulled double to right field.
