ABCA Selects Four Yellowjackets To All-Region Teams

ABCA Selects Four Yellowjackets To All-Region Teams

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester baseball team kept its strong award season going with four more All-Region awards on Tuesday, this time coming from the American Baseball Coaches Association.

UR members on the New York All-Region team, presented by Rawlings, were seniors Nolan Schultz and Steve Eychner who each were selected to the 1st Team, sophomore John Ghyzel who earned 2nd Team honors and senior Evan Janifer who was chosen to the 3rd Team.

Schultz, a catcher from Valrico, Florida, and Eychner a middle infielder from Rome, New York, each earn their second All-Region award this week, after both were selected as 1st Team recipients from D3baseball.com on Monday.  Ghyzel (Centreville, VA) also was named to the D3baseball.com team as a 3rd Team choice while Janifer (Montclair, NJ), is a two-time ABCA All-Region player after being named 2nd Team in 2014.

Schultz's standout career ended this year after hitting .386 with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 26 RBI and 28 runs scored.  He was a 1st Team All-Liberty League and 2nd Team selection from the UAA.  The 2016 season is the second straight year Schultz earned ABCA All-Region recognition, as he was a 3rd Team selection following his junior campaign.  During his career, Schultz was a key member of the lineup all four years, hitting in the middle of the order while also playing solid defense behind the plate.  He finishes his time at UR with 171 hits, a .338 average, 96 RBI and 86 runs scored while also throwing out 53 batters from behind the plate, the most in school history.

Eychner earns his first ABCA All-Region award following a career year in his senior season.  He started all but two games for the Yellowjackets in the middle infield, hit a team best .418 with 29 runs, 25 RBI, 13 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs.  He added 10 stolen bases and had a .951 fielding percentage and was UR's only 1st Team honoree from both the Liberty League and UAA.  His senior year more than doubled his career totals in runs and hits and raised his career batting average by over 70 percentage points to .339 over his four years.

Ghyzel led the UR pitching staff in 2016 in innings (60.2), wins (7) and strikeouts (51) while compiling a 2.97 ERA.  He was named to the All-Liberty League 1st Team, All-UAA 2nd Team and to the UAA All-Tournament team following his performance in Florida.  Opponents hit just .245 against the right hander and he allowed just 56 hits, 28 runs (20 earned) and 17 walks.  Against RPI in late March, Ghyzel struck out 12 Engineers, the second most in a single game in UR history.  His seven wins match the second most in a single year for a UR pitcher.  Overall, he nearly cut his ERA in half from his freshman year and doubled his strikeout total.

Janifer had another stellar season on the mound for Rochester, leading the team with a 1.84 ERA in 53.2 innings.  He sported a 4-5 record in 11 appearances, also saving two games.  He allowed 60 hits, 23 runs (11 earned) while only walking 11 and striking out 45.  His career ERA in 45 appearances for the Yellowjackets is 4th all time (2.17); he has the 2nd most saves in school history (12) and has the 2nd fewest walks per nine innings allowed (1.61).  In 2016, Janifer was a 1st Team All-Liberty League selection and 2nd Team All-UAA choice, including being named to the UAA All-Tournament Team.
