Pitching Lifts Rochester Over Washington

Pitching Lifts Rochester Over Washington

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester got a masterful pitching performance from three arms and defeated Washington-St. Louis 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the UAA Baseball Championships at Sanford Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore starter John Ghyzel posted his second straight impressive start, tossing 6.1 innings of 8-hit ball, striking out five and walking three, earning his 2nd win of the tournament.  Teammate Jack Denzer came in during a 7th inning jam and escaped without allowing a run and senior Evan Janifer picked up the save after tossing a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for UR (4-3, 4-3 UAA).

Washington (11-4, 5-2 UAA), a day after earning a thrilling walk-off win in 10 innings over Emory, couldn't muster any offense, but still remains in 1st place in the tournament standings.

Junior infielder Pete Carrier powered the Yellowjacket offense on Saturday, posting a 3-4 day at the plate, adding a key RBI in the 5th inning after leadoff hitter Matt Todd tripled to start the frame.  Todd also had a solid day, going 2-4 with that triple, a run scored and an RBI.

Todd's RBI came in the 2nd inning and started the scoring in the game.  Back-to-back singles by Steve Eychner and Sam Steele put two runners on and one out.  After a flyout, Todd came through with a clutch two-out RBI to put UR on the board.

The Bears were able to get multiple runners on in the 4th, 6th and 7th innings, but couldn't break through on the UR pitching staff.  With two on and one out in the fourth, Ghyzel fanned back-to-back batters to escape that chance.  Two innings later, the same two-on, one-out situation arose, but Ghyzel induced a pop up and then struck out a batter to again get out of the inning.

WU's best chance came in the 7th when they loaded the bases with just one out, chasing Ghyzel from the game.  Freshman Jack Denzer then took the hill and got the Bear hitter to ground to first, getting the force out a home for the second out.  The next hitter then dribbled a comebacker to Denzer who secured the out.
