Junior Brad Margolin tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout to lead the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team to an 8-0 win over Augustana College (Ill.) in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Division III Central Regional Wednesday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
Margolin (8-1) struck out four and did not walk a batter throwing 101 pitches. He also improved his career record 14-2 with the victory.
WashU improved its overall record to 32-16, while Augustana had its seven-game win streak snapped and fell to 30-13. The Bears take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a winner's bracket game Thursday at 7 p.m.
"It was one of the better ones I have seen in the postseason. To shutout out a team like that has the type of offensive fire power like they do," said first-year WashU head coach Pat Bloom, who picked up career win number 425. "I thought he controlled them from the beginning. It was a total dominant performance from Brad."
WashU recorded three-straight infield singles to start the contest, and took a 1-0 lead after an RBI single by junior Ben Browdy. Augie starting pitcher Walter white walked the bases loaded in the third, and then senior Kyle Kozak ripped a double off the left field wall to drive in a pair of make it 3-0.
Senior Max Golembo started a rally in the fifth for WashU with a single to right. Junior Christian Santos sent a pitch off the right field wall for an RBI triple, and then Browdy singled to left to make it 5-0. The RBI for Browdy was his NCAA Division III leading 73rd of the season.
Santos drove in a run with an RBI single in the sixth, and freshman Ethan Kuehl singled up the middle in the seventh to make it 7-0.
WashU had 11 hits in the win and took advantage of seven walks. Browdy (2-for-4, two RBIs), Golembo (2-for-3, two runs scored, two walks) and Santos (2-for-3, two runs scored, two RBIs, walk) each had a pair of hits in the victory.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: The Bears are 5-18 all-time in 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament … WashU swept a doubleheader from Augustana March 4 in St. Louis … Golembo played in his 158th career game, seventh most in school history … The 32 wins are two shy of the WashU single-season record … The Bears have won all three games against Augie this season … The victory for the senior class was its 119th, most in school history … Golembo moved into a tie for sixth in school history with 202 hits … Darmawan's hit in the first was the 85th of the season, setting a WashU single-season record.
