The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team bounced back from a game one loss to DePauw University to earn a 9-5 win in game two as the the two teams squared off in the start of a four-game series on Friday at Kelly Field. The Bears suffered a 5-1 loss in the opener.
WashU dropped to 28-14 with the split, while DePauw fell to 19-16.
Junior Ben Browdy went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a pair of walks and drove in three runs in game two to set the WashU single-season record for RBIs with 69. Browdy ranks first in NCAA Division III and fourth in all NCAA Divisions.
WashU concludes a five-game homestand by hosting DePauw for a doubleheader Sunday beginning at Noon. Prior to the contest, WashU will honor its three seniors: Julian Clarke, Max Golembo and Kyle Kozak.
DePauw 5, WashU 1 – Game One
Junior Scott Nelson (6-5) took the loss in the opener despite giving up just nine hits and four runs (two earned) in 8 1/3 innings pitched. Nelson struck out three and walked two.
WashU recorded six singles in game one and left eight runners on base. Junior Tate Maiderdrove in the only run for the Bears in the second on an infield single.
Tied at 1-1 in the ninth, Nelson allowed the first two runners to reach on a hit by pitch and a walk. He gave up an RBI single to make it 2-1, and was replaced by junior Bill Heisler. The Bears committed an error which loaded the bases, and then after a strikeout, Lucas Italiano cleared the bases with a double to right.
Senior Kyle Kozak was 2-for-3, while Maider was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
WashU 9, DePauw 5 – Game Two
Clarke (5-4) tossed eight innings allowing eight hits and one unearned run as he picked up the win in game two. He allowed an unearned run in the second inning.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, Maider tied the game on a fielder's choice RBI.
WashU scored three runs on four hits in the third to gain the 4-1 advantage. Junior Ben Browdy ripped a two-RBI double to left and then freshman Wright Lindgren drove in a run after reaching on an error.
WashU put the game out of reach scoring five runs on five hits in the fifth. Junior Christian Santos led off the inning with a double, and then Browdy ripped the first pitch to left for an RBI double. Kozak added an RBI walk, and then junior Spencer Egly roped a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle. Junior Austin Darmawan added an RBI triple to right.
Santos was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Egly (2-for-4, run scored, two RBIs), Kozak (2-for-3, RBI) and sophomore Conor O'Hara (2-for-5, two runs scored) had a pair of hits.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Darmawan's 15-game hitting streak came to an end in game one … Golembo played in his 152nd career game, eighth most in school history … The Bears have recorded double-digit hit totals in 23 games … Browdy leads the team with 21 multiple-RBI games … WashU is 15-3 this season at home … The Bears have recorded 28 wins in three of the last four seasons … Browdy had 40 RBIs in 18 games in the month of April.
