The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team scored the first four runs of the game and recorded 11 total hits en route to a 9-1 victory at Hendrix College Sunday afternoon.

WashU improved to 1-2 with the win, while Hendrix dropped to 2-5. The Bears are scheduled to host their home opener with a doubleheader against Greenville College beginning at Noon Saturday, Feb. 27.  

The Bears got off to a quick start, scoring in the first inning for the third game in a row. Junior Austin Darmawan hit an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a leadoff single and senior Max Golembo was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, junior Ben Browdy drove a double down the right-field line to quickly give WashU a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Conor O'Hara got a one-out single up the middle to move Browdy to third, and he scored on a fielder's choice by junior Spencer Egly to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bears.

Junior Scott Nelson reached on a Hendrix error to lead off the top of the second, and WashU took advantage. Nelson stole second then moved to third on a failed pickoff with Darmawan on first. Browdy got his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Nelson and extend WashU's lead to 4-0. The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a two-out single after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch.

The Bears added an unearned run in the top of the seventh, before tacking on four more runs in the top of the eighth. In the eighth, O'Hara led off with a single and stole second before Egly drove an RBI triple down the right-field line. Freshman Ethan Kuehl drove in Egly with a sacrifice fly and Nelson kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left-center. After Nelson stole second, Darmawan hit an RBI double and Golembo followed with an RBI single to make it 9-1 in favor of the Bears.

WashU finished with 11 hits and took advantage of six errors by Hendrix in the game. The Warriors had seven hits, but just three of them came with fewer than two outs. Hendrix also left 10 baserunners stranded in the game.

Six different players recorded hits for the Bears in the win. Darmawan (2-for-4, two runs, double, walk, RBI), Golembo (2-for-4, run, RBI), Browdy (2-for-3, double, run, three RBIs), O'Hara (2-for-5, run) and Nelson (2-for-4, three runs) had two hits apiece, while Egly accounted for the other hit (1-for-4, triple, run, two RBIs).

Senior Julian Clarke (1-0) pitched six strong innings for the Bears, limiting Hendrix to one earned run on five hits. Junior Matt Clohisy allowed two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, and freshman Sean Clarke recorded the final two outs for the Bears.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Golembo increased his career stolen bases total to 48, moving into a tie with Brandon Rogalski (2009-12) for sixth on WashU's all-time career leaderboard … Browdy finished the opening weekend 6-for-12 with a double, a triple, and a run scored … He accounted for seven of WashU's 13 RBIs on the weekend … Eight different Bears played in their first varsity games at Hendrix.
