Junior Ben Browdy went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs to increase his NCAA Division III-leading RBI total to 66 to lead the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team to a 9-3 win over Millikin University Thursday in St. Louis.
WashU won its fifth-straight game to improve to 27-13, while Millikin fell to 15-15. The Bears also improved its record at Kelly Field this season to 14-2.
WashU continues a five-game homestand by hosting DePauw University (18-15) on Friday, April 29, for the first two of four games between the two teams this weekend. Game one is set for Friday at 1 p.m. The two teams will also play a doubleheader Sunday. Prior to Sunday's contests, WashU will honor its three seniors: Julian Clarke, Max Golembo and Kyle Kozak.
WashU put two runs on the board in the third on RBI singles by junior Christian Santos and Browdy. Its remained a two-run game until the fifth when Millikin scored a pair of runs off junior starter Brad Margolin to knot the score at 2-2.
The Bears scored two runs in the seventh on a pair of hits to make it 4-2, highlighted by sophomore Conor O'Hara's RBI single through the left side.
WashU put the game out of reach scoring five runs on four hits in the eighth to build a 9-2 advantage. Junior Austin Darmawan drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice, and then Santos ripped a triple to left center to score two more.
The Bears were not done yet in the eighth as Browdy followed with an RBI double and then sophomore Auggie Mense added an RBI single to round out the scoring for WashU.
Margolin (6-1) picked up the win allowing eight hits and two earned runs in eight innings pitched. He struck out six and walked two. Margolin is 3-0 with a 2.93 earned run average in five starts in the month of April.
Darmawan (2-for-5, three runs scored, RBI), O'Hara (2-for-3, RBI) and Santos (2-for-5, run scored, three RBIs) each had multi-hit games for the Bears. WashU recorded 13 hits in the win and took advantage of five errors by Millikin.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Browdy is one RBI shy of tying Chris Lowery's single-season school record mark of 67 set in 2015 … Golembo played in his 150th career game, tied for 10th most in school history … WashU was No. 3 in the first set of NCAA Division III Central Region Rankings … The Bears have recorded double-digit hit totals in 22 games … The victory for head coach Pat Bloom was the 420th of his career.
