All nine starters recorded hits and seven different players had RBIs as the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team earned an 11-3 win over New York University Tuesday at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
WashU improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the UAA with the win, while NYU fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Bears take on Brandeis University at 5 p.m. (ET) Wednesday, March 8.
WashU got its first four batters on base in the bottom of the first inning and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one frame. Sophomore Conor O'Hara drew a bases-loaded walk and freshman Ethan Kuehl followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. A single by junior Tate Maider added another run and O'Hara scored when junior Ted Daley reached on a two-out error to give the Bears a 4-0 advantage.
NYU got on the scoreboard in the top of the third, loading the bases with a walk and two singles before getting an RBI single to make it 4-1. Freshman Curtis Hoffman got the Violets to fly into a double play and then got a groundout to get out of the inning without anymore runs scoring. The Bears got the run back when Maider hit a two-out, solo homerun in the bottom of the third to extend WashU's lead to 5-1.
Two more runs came across for WashU in the bottom of the fourth when junior Ben Browdy, junior Christian Santos and O'Hara hit three two-out singles in a row. The Bears got another crooked inning in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits in the inning. Daley hit a two-RBI double and came around to score on a single to left field by junior Scott Nelson. Browdy then came through with a two-out single to left to score Nelson and extend the Bears' lead to 11-1. NYU scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, and added another run in the eighth to make the final score 11-3.
Hoffman (2-0) got the win in the first start of his career, allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work. Juniors Chris McKee allowed one unearned run in two innings, while junior Max Cormier and freshman Nick East each pitched one inning of relief.
Browdy finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead WashU offensively. Junior Austin Darmawan (2-for-4, run), Maider (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs), Daley (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) and Kuehl (2-for-3, RBI) added two hits each.
