Junior Austin Darmawan went 9-for-10 with four runs scored and five RBIs to help lead the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at the University of Chicago Saturday in the Windy City.
The Bears exploded for 15 hits in a 17-3 victory in seven innings in game one, and then scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth in a 5-4 victory in the regular-season finale.
With the two wins, the Bears improved its overall record to 31-16 and will await an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. The tournament field will be announced at 11 p.m. Sunday on NCAA.com.
Darmawan upped his team-leading batting average to .408, and increased his conference-leading run total to 58. He is one run shy of the WashU single-season record.
WashU 17, Chicago 3 – Game One
The Bears broke open a tie game in the third inning scoring nine runs on eight hits. Junior Christian Santos drove in two with a single up the middle, and junior Ted Daley added two RBIs with a double to left center.
Wash U pushed the lead to 12-2 in fourth following an RBI double by senior Kyle Kozak and an RBI single up the middle by Daley. The Bears put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single to right by Darmawan.
Darmawan went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, while Kozak was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Daley added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Santos added four RBIs.
Senior Max Golembo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases, and recorded the 200th hit of his career. He is the seventh player in school history to achieve the feat. Golembo also moved into second place in WashU history with 165 runs scored.
Junior Scott Nelson (7-5) tossed a complete game allowing 10 hits and three earned runs (two earned). The win for Nelson was the 15th of his career.
WashU 5, Chicago 4 – Game Two
Darmawan was 5-for-5 with two runs scored in game two. He scored the tying run in the top of the ninth on a single to center by Santos. Junior Ben Browdy followed with a single to center to score Golembo for the game-winning RBI.
WashU had 15 hits in game two, as Santos went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Sophomores Auggie Mense (2-for-4, RBI) and Conor O'Hara (2-for-5, run scored, RBI) added a pair of hits.
A RBI single by Santos in the first gave WashU the 1-0 lead. Chicago scored a run in the second and then added two in the fifth to make it 3-1. The Bears tied the contest at 3-3 in the sixth after an RBI single by O'Hara and an RBI double by Mense.
Chicago added a run in the seventh to take the 4-3 lead.
Senior Julian Clarke made the start and allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 inning innings pitched. Freshman Zack Kotin (2-2) picked up the win allowing one hit in two inning of relief, while senior Brad Margolin got the final two outs in the ninth for his sixth career save.
