The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team posted a 6-5 15-inning win in game one to highlight a pair of wins over the University of the Chicago Saturday at Kelly Field. WashU recorded an 11-1 victory in game two.
WashU improved to 22-12 with the two wins, while Chicago dropped to 12-12. The two teams will close out a three-game series with a single game Sunday, April 17, at Noon.
Junior Austin Darmawan went 5-for-8 with four runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases in the doubleheader sweep, and was on base eight times. Darmawan is first in the University Athletic Association (UAA) in hits (59), runs (42) and stolen bases (23), and is second in batting average (.401).
WashU 6, Chicago 5 (15 Innings) – Game One
Junior Wright Lindgren drove in the game-winning RBI on a fielder's choice with no outs in the 15th inning as the Bears won the opener that lasted four hours and 35 minutes. Senior Max Golembo was hit-by-pitch to open the 15th, and then junior Scott Nelson bunted for a hit and junior Ben Browdy was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Lindgren then grounded a ball to third that Tim Sonnefeldt fielded and threw home, but Golembo just beat the throw for the game-winning run.
Sophomore Alex Truss (2-1) picked up the win tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Junior Brad Margolin made the start and allowed nine hits and four earned runs in eight innings.
Darmawan (3-for-6, two RBI), junior Spencer Egly (3-for-5, run scored) and senior Kyle Kozak(3-for-7, RBI) each had three hits. WashU had 18 hits in the victory and left 17 runners on base.
WashU scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. Junior Tate Maider and Kozak each had RBI singles in the inning, while Golembo drove in a run with a bases loaded walk.
Chicago answered back with two runs in the fifth off Margolin, and then added a run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. WashU regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth at 4-3 after Darmawan laced a triple to left center with two outs to score Egly.
Chicago tied the game in the top of the eighth with a run, but the Bears answered right back as Darmawan roped an RBI single to right to make it 5-4. The Maroons took advantage of a leadoff walk in the ninth to tie the game on a wild pitch by freshman Sean Clarke.
WashU 11, Chicago 1 (Seven Innings) – Game Two
Junior Scott Nelson (5-4) tossed a complete game in the second game allowing five hits and one earned run. The complete game for Nelson was the sixth of his career.
Browdy drove in his 52nd run of the season as WashU jumped in front 2-0 after an inning of play. Darmawan made it 3-0 in the third after he scored on a wild pitch, and then he drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1.
Golembo singled to right to drive in two more runs, and then Santos followed with a two-RBI double. The hit parade continued in the fourth as Browdy smashed a pitch to dead center for an RBI double to make it 9-1. WashU scored seven runs on six hits in the fourth.
Santos was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Browdy (2-for-4, run scored, two RBIs) and Darmawan (2-for-2, four runs scored, two stolen bases, RBI) each had a pair of hits. The Bears recorded 11 hits in the win.
