Junior Bill Heisler allowed just two hits in a career-high eight innings of work, and the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the fifth as the Bears earned a 1-0 win over the University of Rochester Monday morning at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
The win gave head coach Pat Bloom the 400th victory of his career, as he improved his overall record to 400-178 (.692) in 13 seasons as a collegiate coach. With the win, WashU improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the UAA, while Rochester dropped to 1-1 overall and in the conference. The Bears return to action at 11 a.m. (ET) Tuesday when they square off against New York University.
Making the second start of his career, Heisler (1-0) allowed just two hits through eight-plus innings of work on the mound for the Bears. After giving up a two-out double in the top of the second, he retired 15 of the next 16 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single in the top of the seventh. Heisler issued his third walk of the game to the leadoff batter in the top of the ninth, giving way for junior Matt Clohisy to take over on the mound. Clohisy got an out on a sacrifice bunt, followed by two flyouts to junior Christian Santos in left field, to earn his second save of the season and the 10th of his career.
After leaving seven baserunners stranded through the first four innings of the game, WashU put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth when Santos reached on an error. Sophomore Conor O'Hara kept the inning going with a single to left field, and Santos came around to score when junior Spencer Egly reached on a throwing error by Rochester, giving WashU the 1-0 lead.
The Bears got their first three batters of the game on base when junior Austin Darmawan drew a walk and senior Max Golembo and junior Ben Browdy hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Santos lifted a ball to right field, but the Yellowjackets were able to throw Darmawan out at the plate for the double play and a groundout ended the inning. WashU put together another scoring threat in the bottom of the fourth when junior Tate Maider and freshman Ethan Kuehl got back-to-back one-out singles, but Rochester again got out of the inning with two groundouts to keep the game scoreless.
WashU finished with nine hits in the game, while Heisler and Clohisy limited Rochester to just two hits. Heisler also finished with a career-high six strikeouts in the game. Golembo and Kuehl each finished 2-for-4 at the plate as seven different players recorded hits for the Bears.
