Bears Stay Alive with 5-1 Win Over No. 19 Wartburg

Senior Julian Clarke tossed a complete game allowing one run on seven hits as No. 4 seed Washington University in St. Louis baseball team stayed alive in the 2016 NCAA Division III Central Regional with a 5-1 win over No. 2 seed and No. 19-ranked Wartburg College Friday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

"I thought Julian was everything of what you needed a senior to be in an elimination game in a regional," said first-year WashU head coach Pat Bloom. "He was tough, he commanded the zone and got ahead in the count. I am very proud of him."

Clarke (6-4), who tossed a complete-game a year ago in an elimination game against UW-Whitewater, sat down nine batters in a row at one point and allowed just a solo homerun to Jake Thumann in the sixth inning. He struck out five and did not walk a batter en route to his sixth-career game.

WashU scored first for the third-straight contest in its first at-bat after junior Christian Santosdoubled off the 16-foot wall to drive in senior Max Golembo.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third after singles by junior Spencer Egly and Golembo and a hit-by-pitch to Darmawan. After a strikeout out by Santos, Browdy ripped a single to left to drive in two runs. Senior Kyle Kozak added an RBI groundout to push the lead to 4-0.

The Bears added the insurance run with a safety squeeze by junior Tate Maider in the eighth.

Golembo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and moved into fifth on the WashU all-time list with 206. Freshman Ethan Kuehl added a pair of hits for WashU, who had nine in the win .

BEAR NOTEBOOK: The Bears are 6-19 all-time in 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament, and have won two games in the NCAA for the first time in school history … Golembo played in his 160th career game, fifth most in school history … Browdy leads NCAA Division III with 77 RBIs … Darmawan leads NCAA Division III with 89 hits … WashU is 3-2 against Wartburg since 1985 … Golembo picked up his 40th walk of the season, one shy of the WashU single-season record … WashU is one win shy of the single-season record … The Bears are 2-5 against ranked teams this season, with Clarke making the start in both games.
