Case Western Reserve University clinched a series win at North Carolina Wesleyan College on Thursday afternoon, topping the Battling Bishops 6-4 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The Spartans took two of three games against the Bishops during the week, improving to 3-9 overall, while North Carolina Wesleyan fell to 16-8 with the loss.
Sophomore Tyler Wypiszenski went three-for-four with four RBIs, his second game this week with four or more runs batted in. Senior Eric Eldred added a three-for-four day at the plate with an RBI.
The Spartans took advantage of an error and a walk in the first inning, cashing in three runs on a two-out home run by Wypiszenski, his first of the season and second of his career. The Bishops threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs, but senior starter Jake Shields escaped the inning unscored upon with a line drive double play and a strikeout.
N.C. Wesleyan picked up a run on a two-out RBI single from Luis Palencia in the bottom of the second, and another in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out run scoring hit from Nate Gardner, cutting the lead to 3-2, before freshman Chris Shorter threw a runner out trying to score from third in the inning.
In the top of the eighth, the Spartans extended their lead when senior Aaron Cain scored on a wild pitch, while Wypiszenski drove in his fourth run of the game with a base hit and Eldred added an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-2.
Shields would leave the game after six innings with a 3-2 lead, after allowing just the two runs on seven hits and striking out a pair of batters. After pitching a perfect seventh inning, sophomore Corey Brownallowed a pair of runs in the eighth, but junior Nate Glasser recorded the final out of the frame and pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win and earn his first save of the season.
Shields earned the win on Thursday to improve to 1-2 on the year and move within five of the program's career record. North Carolina Wesleyan's Richard Harrell took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.
