After several scheduling changes and a shift to a neutral site at UMass-Boston, the Emory University and Brandeis University baseball programs finally got together on the diamond Saturday evening with the Eagles winning both games on the night. Both games were seven inning contests.
The change of venue was after the playing field on Brandeis' campus was deemed unplayable following a heavy rainstorm Thursday night.
Senior Jackson Weeg and sophomore Billy Dimlow each recorded complete game shutouts, combining for 21 strikeouts, no walks and only six hits allowed as the Eagles took the first two games of the series from the Judges.
Game One – Emory 6, Brandeis 0
Emory snapped its six-game losing skid, winning the first game of the evening by a six-run margin.
Weeg was virtually unhittable as he went the distance to record his first career shutout. Weeg allowed just three hits on the night, all singles, and racked up double-digit strikeouts for the second consecutive start, finishing with 11.
With the win, Weeg moves into a tie with Will Carr ('05) for fifth place all-time in Emory history with 27 career victories. Weeg also inched closer to the 300 mark in career strikeouts as he now stands at 294 in his career, 20 shy of tying Mike Garvis' program record.
The Eagles broke the tie in the second inning with a perfectly executed double steal play as senior Philip Maldari stole second, allowing junior Bubby Terp to swipe home to put Emory in front.
Four more runs came across the plate in the fourth inning as the Eagles busted open the contest. Terp singled up the middle to plate senior Brian Hernandez who led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Following a walk issued to sophomore David Draper, the next three Emory hitters all drove in a run to make it 5-0. Maldari grounded out to short with senior Jeff Ronpirin scoring on the play. Senior Chris Young laced a single to centerfield to bring home Terp with freshman Richard Brereton plating Draper on a bunt back to the pitcher's mound.
Emory added another run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Jackson Grayson came home on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of junior Josh Rosenblatt.
Game Two – Emory 3, Brandeis 0
Dimlow, not to be outdone, picked up right where Weeg left off as he blanked the Judges across seven innings of three-hit ball of his own. Dimlow posted double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season, finishing with 10 in the game. The second-year right-hander improved to 6-1 with his first complete game shutout and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 0.86 on the year.
Brereton provided the only run support Dimlow needed in the game, delivering a two-run double in the second inning. Ronpirin added a run scoring single in the seventh to put the final clamp on the Saturday sweep.
