Senior Jackson Weeg was masterful on Saturday afternoon, setting the Emory University Baseball single-game school record with 18 strikeouts as the Eagles remained perfect on the season, defeating the Washington & Lee University Generals, 7-3, at Chappell Park.
Weeg's 18 punch outs broke Scott Kramer's previous record, set on April 30th, 1994, when Kramer sent down 16 Methodist hitters in a 2-0 Emory win. Weeg's previous career-best for strikeouts in a contest was 10, which he accomplished twice last season, most recently against Oglethorpe University on April 19th. With his performance on Saturday, Weeg moved into sole possession of sixth place on Emory's all-time career list with 245 strikeouts.
The Woodstock, GA native recorded at least two strikeouts in each of his eight innings on the mound including striking out the side in both the fifth and eighth innings. In eight innings of work, he allowed three runs (2 ER) on six hits and walked just one to collect his first victory of the year.
When the senior southpaw left the game however in the eighth inning, he was not in line for the win as the game was knotted at 3-3 but the Eagles (5-0) made sure their ace got the W, scoring four times in the bottom half of the inning en route to the 7-3 final margin.
Emory loaded the bases with no outs to start the frame as both seniors Wilson Morgan and Brian Hernandez picked up singles with classmate Jeff Ronpirin earning a walk in between. Junior Bubby Terp stepped into the box and was hit on the first pitch by Generals' pitcher Kenneth Hartzfield to force in the go-ahead run. Following a RBI groundout by senior Philip Maldari to make it 5-3, junior Nick Chambers busted the game open with a two-run single up the middle to plate Hernandez and Terp.
Chambers finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs driven in to lead the Emory offense. Maldari added two hits and a RBI with Terp and freshman Richard Brereton also driving in runs for the Eagles.
