NYU Sweeps Brandeis in UAA Doubleheader

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from visiting Brandeis University on Saturday, April 15, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. NYU won the first game 12-2 in eight innings, before winning game two 8-1.

The contests were the second and third of a four-game series between the Violets (14-8, 3-4 UAA) and Judges (2-16, 1-10 UAA) this weekend in Brooklyn. Brandeis won the series opener 4-2 on Friday.

"Those were two big wins for us," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "After a tough loss yesterday, it was important we bounced back and I thought we played two solid games today."

NYU scored three runs in each of the first two innings of the opener to set the tone for the day. Ryan McLaughlin and Colman Hendershot, the two- and three-hitters in the NYU batting order, combined for seven hits and seven runs scored in the victory. Matthew Wells came out of the bullpen to earn his second victory of the year as he pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

The Violets took the momentum into game two, where they used a four-run third inning to go ahead 5-0. The Judges were unable to solve NYU starter Ford Ladd, who had the best pitching performance of his young career. The freshman tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run. Five Violets finished the contest with two hits, including Jonathan Iaione and Jack Brouwer, who each also recorded a pair of RBIs.

"It was a solid all-around performance today," added Kimbler. "We got great pitching from Wells and Ladd, who both took advantage of the crooked numbers their offense was putting on the scoreboard."
