Bobby Moskow, Adrian Spitz Lead NYU Past Edgewood

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team got back in the win column on Tuesday, March 14, defeating previously-unbeaten Edgewood College 12-7, at Terry Park in Ft. Myers, FL.

NYU (7-1) once again used a great offensive performance en route to the victory. The Violets recorded double-digit hits for the seventh-straight game and scored at least 12 runs for the fifth time in eight games this season.

The squads traded runs early as Edgewood (5-1) took a 3-2 lead into the third inning. NYU tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly from Scott Hilbrandt and took the lead in the fourth when Ryan McLaughlin singled in Bobby Moskow.

Moskow broke the game open an inning later, crushing a 3-RBI triple off the top of the wall. Adrian Spitz added four insurance runs in the top of the eighth, blasting a grand slam over the left-centerfield wall. It was Spitz's second home run in as many games.

"Bobby's triple was huge for us," said Assistant Coach Aaron Walsh. "He helped us break the game open and get deeper into their bullpen."

Down 12-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles mounted a small comeback to make the score 12-7. With the bases loaded and one out Eli Edwards was able to induce a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and give the Violets their seventh win of the season.

Ford Ladd started the game on the mound for NYU and earned his first-career victory. Mason Maziarka picked up the loss for Edgewood.

"That was a workhorse performance out of a young guy who gutted it out for us," added Walsh. "That's a good sign for things to come out of him."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Spitz finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate. It was the senior's second four-hit game in the last three days and fourth-straight multi-hit game.

"He's been taking a good approach lately and its paying off," explained Walsh. "He's starting to accept our philosophy at the plate."

- Mclaughlin was 3-for-5 on the day. The sophomore captain also made a pair of great plays at second base early in the game

- Ladd went five innings on the mound and only allowed one earned run.

- The NYU defense turned three double plays in the win, including the game-ending 5-4-3 double.
