NYU Splits Doubleheader With Haverford

NYU Splits Doubleheader With Haverford

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Haverford College on Saturday, March 25, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. NYU won the first game 11-9, before falling 7-4 in game two.

NYU's record now stands at 10-4, while the Fords head back to Pennsylvania with an 8-6 record.

The Violets trailed 7-4 midway through the seventh inning of the opener, but put up a six spot to take a 10-7 lead with two innings to play. Jack Walter came to the plate in the inning with two outs and the bases loaded and delivered big time, crushing a 3-RBI triple to right centerfield to put NYU ahead for the first time all game.

Paul Gadaleta and Matthew Millus pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, for the Violets and helped the squad hold onto the victory. Millus, who allowed just one hit in the ninth, recorded his third save of the season.

Haverford scored twice in the first inning of game two and never looked back as they led for the rest of the game. The Fords put up four more runs in the third inning to go ahead 6-0, before the Violets answered with four straight to close the margin. NYU couldn't get any closer, however, as Haverford tacked on an insurance run in the seventh en route to the 7-4 win.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

- Jonathan Iaione and Colman Hendershot each went 3-for-4 to lead NYU offensively.

- Hendershot and Adrian Spitz each came around to score three times. Hendershot has scored 23 runs through 14 games, the second most on the team (Jack Walter, 28).

- Matthew Wells struck out three over 1.2 innings of work out of the bullpen to earn his first win of the season.

- Ryan McLaughlin made a tremendous play to get the final out of the game. The sophomore captain moved from second base to shortstop in the ninth inning and chased a ball into left field before catching it over his shoulder.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

- Hendershot had another multi-hit game, recording two this time. The sophomore also had three-RBI after clearing the bases on a seventh inning triple.
