NYU Rallies to Another Win

NYU Rallies to Another Win

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team came from behind for the second straight game as they rallied to defeat Rutgers University-Newark 13-11 on Saturday afternoon, March 4, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

NYU (2-0) repeated its performance from Wednesday's season-opening victory over John Jay as it once again tied the game with a big seventh inning before taking the lead for good in the eighth. Senior Jarret Weiss, who came in to pitch the eighth inning, has now earned the mound win in each of the squad's first two games this season.

"This is a resilient bunch of guys," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "They really play hard for each other and today our offense really picked up the pitchers."

It looked like the Violets would not have to rally again as the squad scored the first five runs of the game and led 5-0 after four innings. Rutgers-Newark's (3-2)

offense finally came alive in the top of the fifth as the Scarlet Raiders put up seven runs. After NYU cut the margin to 7-6, Rutgers-Newark added three more runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead by four.

Similar to Wednesday, however, the Violets never quit and scored four runs of their own in the home half of the seventh to tie the contest at 10.

After Weiss shut down the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the eighth, NYU scored three times in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 13-10. The big blow in the inning was a two-RBI triple off the bat of Bobby Moskow.

Junior closer Matthew Millus came on in the ninth inning to end any chance of a Rutgers-Newark comeback as the Violets improved to 2-0.

"Millus has been in that role for three years now and I'm extremely confident whenever he takes the mound," added Kimbler.

Sophomore first baseman Colman Hendershot had a great day at the plate for NYU, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs while also drawing a pair of walks and scoring four runs.

NOTABLES:

- Freshman Sal Cammisuli started the game on the mound for NYU and threw four shutout innings before struggling a bit in the fifth. The rookie only allowed two hits in 4.1 innings of work.

- All three of Hendershot's hits went for extra bases, as NYU's #3 hitter crushed a pair of triples and added a double.

- Sophomore Ryan McLaughlin scored four times.

- Junior Jonathan Iaione led the squad with a game-high four RBIs.

"We need to keep this momentum going and continue to play hard for one another," concluded Kimbler. "We're going to have Hendershot and (Ford) Ladd start on the mound for us tomorrow, and I'm confident they'll keep us rolling."
