NYU Wins Regular Season Finale

NYU Wins Regular Season Finale

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated York College of Pennsylvania 10-2 on Sunday, May 7, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

The victory was NYU's (23-13) fourth in a row and seventh in its last eight games. York dropped to 18-23 following the loss.

"When I got here three years ago we set a goal to get better each day and each year," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "I think we've done that. We took the next step this year and now I look forward to taking the next step."

York (18-23) opened up the scoring in the top of the first, but the Violets quickly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again.

The Spartans tied the game at two in the top of the fifth, but it was all NYU after that as the Violets scored eight combined runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to break the contest open.

Ford Ladd started on the mound for the Violets and tossed five strong innings, allowing just two runs. The freshman was relieved by Zach Cohen, Matthew Wells and Matthew Millus, who combined to shut down the Spartans in the final four innings. Cohen earned the win, his second of the week, to improve to 3-1 on the mound this season.

Colman Hendershot had a big day at the plate for NYU, recording hits in all five of his at-bats. The sophomore first baseman finished the regular season with a .392 batting average.

"It was exactly what we look for in a game," added Kimbler. "We pitched well, played defense and got a few big hits at the right times."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Jack Walter, Ryan McLaughlin and Scott Hilbrandt each had two RBIs to lead NYU.

- Walter, McLaughlin and Hilbrandt all had multi-hit games as well, with each recording a pair of hits.

- With their starts today, McLaughlin and Jonathan Iaione started all 36 games this season for the Violets.

- Iaione finished the regular season hitting a team-best .447. The junior tied Hendershot for the team lead in extra base hits with 20.

Sunday's game wraps up the regular season schedule for NYU.
