Maroons Pitch Past Union, 4-2

The University of Chicago baseball team relied on its pitching to stifle Union (N.Y.) College's offense in Sunday's 4-2 victory.

The Maroons improved to 4-2 and the Dutchmen dropped to 1-1.

UChicago's hitters was also held in check for much of the day, but the bats were opportunistic in the third inning. An error put runners on second and third with no outs. Sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey and sophomore catcher Ian Bohndrove in one each with a singles. Junior first baseman Michael Davis added a sacrifice fly to put the Maroons up 3-0.

The score moved to 4-0 in the top of the seventh, thanks to sophomore second baseman Max Brzostowski's RBI single. Union cut the deficit to 4-2 with one in the seventh on a double steal, and one in the eighth on a single. Then sophomore pitcher Alex McGimpsey entered the eighth inning and stopped the rally with a fly out and a groundout.

McGimpsey then slammed the door in the ninth, inducing a game-ending double play to notch his second save of the season. He went 1.2 innings with one hit and one strikeout.

Sophomore Joe Liberman got the start on the hill. He lasted four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, three hits and two walks. Freshman Jacob Petersen earned his first collegiate win with two innings of relief, totaling one hit and one strikeout. Freshman Patrick Rogers (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K) and sophomore Ravi Bakhai (0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R) also saw action.

The Maroons finished with eight hits. Bohn and sophomore outfielder Josh Parks both went 2-for-4.
