The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team concluded its Florida spring break trip with an 11-0 victory over Mount St. Joseph University on Friday morning at Lake Myrtle Field #2.
The Bears totaled 11 hits as senior Austin Darmawan and freshman John Brinkmancombined for six runs batted in from the top two spots in the lineup. Sophomore Auggie Menseled the team with three runs from the nine hole.
WashU improved to 9-5 on the season while dropping the Lions to 4-6 on the year. The Bears' offense scored in five of seven innings, while the combination of starting pitcher Scott Nelsonand reliever Jake Mintz held Mt. St. Joseph's off the scoreboard one day after the Lions erupted for 17 runs.
Junior Conor O'Hara was the first to score for the Bears in the second inning on a wild pitch before senior Ted Daley advanced to third before scoring on a throwing error from the catcher during the same play.
WashU added a run in the third as senior Tate Maider grounded into a double-play with the bases loaded to score senior Ben Browdy. The Bears led 3-0 after the run.
Darmawan tallied the Bears first RBI of the day in the fourth inning when he doubled to left center scoring sophomore John Ostrander. Brinkman added to WashU's lead with an RBI single that scored Mense and Darmawan scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to put the Bears ahead 6-0.
The Bears added to their lead when Brinkman doubled down the left field line, plating Mense and Darmawan. After scoring in four straight innings, the Bears were held off the scoreboard in the sixth as Mintz made his appearance on the mound after five shutout innings of three-hit ball from Nelson.
In the bottom of the seventh, WashU added three runs to conclude the game on a run rule walk off double by Darmawan. After Daley scored on a balk, Mense reached base on a hit by pitch. Darmawan followed a double steal from Ostrander and Mense with a two-run scoring double down the left field line, which put WashU ahead by 11 to conclude the action.
Nelson finished the game with his first win of the season over five shutout innings while striking out five compared to two walks. Mintz tossed the final two shutout innings for WashU allowing two hits, striking out two with one walk.
Mense reached base during all four plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with two walks and a hit by pitch. Darmawan, Brinkman and Daley all collected two-hit days at the plate while both of Darmawan's were for extra bases.
