The No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team closed out the regular season with its eighth straight victory, defeating University of Chicago 14-5 on Sunday afternoon at Kelly Field to cap off the senior day celebration.
The Bears concluded regular season play by improving to 26-8, while they handed Chicago its fourth straight loss dropping the Maroons to 22-15. WashU scored 14 runs on 12 hits, taking advantage of two Chicago errors as well.
Senior Austin Darmawan got things rolling in the first inning by drawing a walk before his stolen base led to a run-scoring single by senior Ben Browdy. The Bears continued to add to the lead in the following three innings while sophomore Zack Kotin kept the Maroons off the scoreboard.
WashU built a 7-0 lead by the start of the fifth inning as Darmawan, Browdy, and senior Christian Santos knocked in multiple runs. Chicago knocked in its first run of the game during the fifth inning, as the Maroons rightfielder Max Larsen singled up the middle plating Max Brzostowski.
The fifth inning was the first frame on the day WashU failed to score, while Chicago continued to chip away in the sixth inning. The Maroons pulled within two of the Bears taking advantage of a throwing error.
Senior Matt Clohisy helped weather the storm as he entered the sixth inning with two outs and two runners on. Despite giving up two run scoring hits, he kept the Bears ahead and closed out the contest to bring his season save total to four, which ties senior Jake Mintz for the team lead.
WashU put the game out of reach in the eighth inning with seven runs. The inning was highlighted by Darmwan's 200th career hit and senior Tate Maider's two run homerun which closed out the game's scoring.
Kotin finished the game with 5 2/3 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts. Clohisy closed out the game's remaining 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
All six seniors in the batting order finished the game with at least one hit. Darmawan led the team with a 3-for-4 performance and four runs batted in while Browdy, Santos, Maider and senior Ted Daley finished with two hits apiece. One day after earning a victory, senior Scott Nelson started the game in centerfield and finished 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
