Season-Opening Win Streak Hits Nine for NYU

Season-Opening Win Streak Hits Nine for NYU

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team defeated Alfred State College for the second time in three days with a 14-5 victory over the Pioneers on Wednesday, March 14, in Ft. Myers, FL.

NYU's (9-0) win over Alfred St. (1-9) came less than 48 hours after it defeated the Pioneers 14-3 on Monday at the New York Yankees minor league spring training facility in Tampa, FL.

The Pioneers struck first with a run in the bottom of the second, but NYU answered with eight unanswered, including six in the top of the fourth. Five of those runs in the fourth inning came with two outs.

Alfred St. scored three times in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-4, but that was as close as it would get as NYU tacked on four more in the seventh to take a comfortable lead into the late innings.

Sal Cammisuli started on the mound for the Violets and struck out seven over five innings to improve to 2-0. All four runs allowed by the sophomore were unearned.

Every player in the NYU starting lineup recorded at least one base knock in the win, with five Violets tallying a pair of hits. Leadoff hitter Ryan McLaughlin was one of the five to get two hits and the junior captain also knocked in a game-high four runs.

Extra Bases:

- Joseph Prisco relieved Cammisuli in the sixth and tossed two shutout innings. Zach Cohen also kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard in one inning pitched.

- Cooper Halpern was 2-for-4 and scored a game-best three runs.

- Chris Cassandra had his best game of the season at the plate. The freshman reached base safely via a hit, walk and hit by pitch and also knocked in a pair of runs.

- Following Wednesday's slate of games there are 14 Division III squads without a loss. The Violets are one of just four to play nine or more games.
