NYU Improves to 4-0 With Doubleheader Sweep of SUNY Canton

From NYU Athletics

The New York University baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Canton on Sunday, March 4, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Violets took game one 8-2 and followed it up with a 9-0 victory in game two to complete the sweep.

NYU (4-0) used a seven-run seventh inning in the opener to turn a 2-1 deficit into a comfortable, 8-2 lead it was able to hold on to. In game two, the Violets scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back to complete the two-day, three-game series sweep of SUNY Canton (0-3).

Sal Cammisuli earned the victory for NYU in game one, tossing seven innings, while scattering eight hits and striking out three. Cammisuli and the Violets trailed heading into the home half of the seventh, but were able to break the game open with a big inning highlighted by a bases clearing double from Ryan Mclaughlin.

"We were down, but never panicked," said McLaughlin, a junior captain. "We believe in each other and owed it to Sal to get a few runs there."

Braeden Duff relieved Cammisuli in the eighth and threw two perfect innings to seal the victory.

In game two, the Violets didn't wait until the late innings to get their bats going as Colman Hendershot and Jonathan Iaione crushed a two-run triple and an RBI double, respectively, before an out was even recorded in the bottom of the first.

Ford Ladd started the game and was lights out for seven innings, allowing just four hits and one walk, while striking out five Kangaroos.

"Ford and Sal both worked real hard during the offseason," added McLaughlin. "They put in work in the weight room and on the mound and it really showed today."

NOTABLES:

- McLaughlin's three-run double was his first hit of the season, but the second baseman has been finding other ways to get on base. Through four games, his on-base percentage is .526.

- Iaione now has 13 RBI in just four games this season. The senior is hitting .455 with three extra base hits.

- Jack Walter (.500) and Hendershot (.438) are both hitting well over .400, as well.

- NYU has already stole 16 bases this season. Walter leads the way with five.
