The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated Greenville University Wednesday evening by a score of 15-4 on the road at Robert E. Smith Field.

WashU improved to 10-6 on the year while the Panthers fell to 5-8. The Bears reached double figures in hits for the fifth time this season while scoring 15 runs for the third time. WashU totaled 14 hits as four players recorded multi-hit performances.

Sophomores John Brinkman and John Ostrander led the team with three hits apiece while classmate Brian Schutter totaled a game-high three runs batted in. Brinkman and sophomore Thomas Gardner combined for eight runs scored as the tandem reached base nine times.

The Bears worked their way to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning utilizing three wild pitches along with three walks and two hits to score. Ostrander provided the lone run-scoring hit of the frame with an infield single.

The Panthers struck back immediately to take a 4-3 lead at the conclusion of one inning, but the Bears evened things up on an error by Greenville in the third which allowed Gardner to score.

WashU took the lead in the fourth by scoring five runs on run-scoring singles by Schutter, Ostrander and sophomore Andrew Kleiboeker. Kleiboeker knocked in two runs with his single to left field which put the Bears up 9-4.

Freshman Tim Tague held the Panthers to two hits as he earned his second victory of the season by tossing six scoreless innings while striking out eight. Sophomore Matt Ashbaugh pitched the final inning while striking out three, as the Bears pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts to reach double figures for the seventh time this season and third consecutive game.

WashU scored a run in the fifth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to end the game after eight innings with an 11 run lead. Freshman Sean Robinson recorded his first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
