The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split Saturday's University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against New York University on the road at MCU Park, defeating the violets 6-2 in game one before falling 4-2 in the second.
The Bears conclude the day 13-8 overall, with a 2-1 record in UAA play while NYU is now to 16-3, after picking up its first win in the UAA (1-2). WashU outhit NYU 15-11 during the doubleheader while holding the Violets to just four earned runs.
Game 1: WashU 6 – NYU 2
WashU scored four of its six runs on sacrifices as freshman Collin Kahal was the lone Bear to record a run-scoring hit in the fifth inning when he drove in sophomore Brian Schutter.
The Red & Green's efficient attack backed freshman Ryan Loutos' strong performance on the mound. The Barrington, Ill.-native threw eight innings, allowing four hits, two runs, while striking out seven. He picked up his fourth win of the year, while sophomore John Brinkman struck out three in the ninth as the Bears pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts marking the 10th time the WashU pitching staff has reached double figure strikeout totals.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore John Ostrander, but a run-scoring infield single by the Violets in the bottom half of the frame evened things at 1-all. Ostrander's run in the fifth put WashU ahead 2-1 after he scored on a wild pitch before a sac fly by sophomore AJ Dunham plated junior Evan Nagel. Kahal's RBI single put the Bears ahead 4-1 in the fifth.
Loutos followed the three-run top of the fifth with two consecutive three-up, three-down frames. WashU added two runs in the eighth inning on runs by Brinkman and sophomore Thomas Gardner. The Bears were knocked in by sacrificed by Nagel and Schutter.
The Violets scored in the bottom of the eighth, but Brinkman shut the door on NYU in the ninth as WashU won its third consecutive game.
Kahal led the Bears with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while freshman Henry Singer also had a multi-hit game by going 2-for-5.
Game 2: NYU 4 – WashU 2
WashU claimed a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. The Bears took advantage of a couple of errors to go along with two hits and a walk.
Dunham led the second inning off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch after a single by freshman Jack DeSalvo put him in scoring position. A missed fly ball extended the Bears inning and allowed the second run to cross the plate.
An error by the Bears in the bottom half of the fourth inning keyed the Violets first run. Another error in the bottom of the sixth doomed WashU as it extended the frame which led to NYU taking a 3-2 lead.
Junior John Howard pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three unearned runs while striking out six. Sophomore Jack Besser entered in relief to pitch two innings of one-run ball with two punch outs.
DeSalvo led WashU in game two with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored as the Bears failed to drive in a run, leaving 10 runners left on base.
