Carnegie Mellon to Host 3rd Annual Cindy Lackner Memorial Game

Carnegie Mellon to Host 3rd Annual Cindy Lackner Memorial Game

From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

This Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon University football team is dedicating itself to raising funds for breast cancer research. In honor of Cindy Lackner, the late wife of head football coach Rich Lackner, the Tartans have announced that this weekend's game will be the "Third Annual Cindy Lackner Memorial Football Game."  Spearheading the event are seniors Dustin Schneider, Tim Swanson, and Alex D'Angelo.

Cindy Lackner passed away in August of 2012 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. On Saturday and the rest of 2014, Carnegie Mellon football players will be wearing pink ribbons on their helmets with Cindy's initials on them. At Saturday's game against Westminster, the team will be accepting contributions at the gate, as well as offering raffles, selling t-shirts, baked goods, and the other small items to raise funds in Cindy's memory.

Throughout the week, members of the Carnegie Mellon Football Team and many other student-athletes will raise awareness on campus regarding breast cancer research and collect donations targeted for the University of Pittsburgh Women's Cancer Research Fund.

The team has already begun the fundraising efforts with a large order of pink socks, shoelaces and arm bands that will be worn on Saturday. The student-athlete advisory council has also raised funds with t-shirts.  The team has asked fans to come cheer them on, wear pink and continue to support Carnegie Mellon Football's fight against breast cancer.

Later on in October, both the volleyball team and the women's soccer team will be having "Think Pink" games of which proceeds will also benefit The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in memory of Cindy Lackner.

If you would like to make a contribution, please visit the donation website to make a gift online. Once you reach the second page, please select "Women's Cancer Research Fund," and enter "Cindy Lackner Memorial Football Game" in the "memorial, honor, or special instructions" field. All checks and gifts should be made out to UPCI and should reference the "Cindy Lackner Memorial Football Game" in the memo.
