Washington University in St. Louis senior kicker Alex Hallwachs and senior defensive lineman Brian Douglas were named to the 2015 Academic All-America Division III Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hallwachs was a first-team selection this season after earning second-team honors a year ago, while Douglas was named to the second team. Hallwachs joins John Woock (2003, 2004) as the only multi-year Academic All-America selection in school history, and just the third to earn first team honors.
Hallwachs earned first-team all-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) and all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors, and was tabbed the UAA Special Teams Player of the Year. He tied a single-season school record going 15-of-25 in field goals, and set a school record going 44-of-45 in extra points. Hallwachs led the SAA and UAA in field goals (15), and also was second in both leagues in scoring (89).
A four-time UAA Athlete of the Week and three-time SAA Athlete of the Week honoree in 2015, Hallwachs was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List. He booted a school-record 53-yard field goal at Berry College Oct. 3, and set a single-season school record going 9-for-9 in extra points vs. Millsaps College Oct. 24. Hallwachs holds the WashU career record for field goals (45) and extra points (97).
A three-time Academic All-District and Academic all-UAA selection, Hallwachs has a 3.62 GPA while majoring in biology.
"Alex has been an achiever on the field since his freshman year, and will graduate as one of the best ever to play for WashU," said head coach Larry Kindbom. "Alex has made many big kicks for us in that time. He will take his neuroscience degree into the medical field, and will be highly successful there as well."
Douglas earned second-team all-UAA and honorable-mention all-SAA honors in his final season with the Bears. He started all 10 games on the defensive line for WashU making 35 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Douglas recorded six tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack vs. Birmingham-Southern College Sept. 26, and also added six stops at No. 23 Case Western Reserve University Oct. 31.
A two-time Academic All-District and three-time Academic all-UAA selection, Douglas has a 3.79 GPA while majoring in biology.
"Brian has accomplished so much as a stalwart on our defensive front, where he consistently played among the league's best," said Kindbom. "The success of his academic and athletic lives is surpassed only by his work ethic and dedicated leadership on and off the field. These attributes will be great segues into his career as a future doctor."
The CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
