University of Chicago football player Chandler Carroll was announced as a semifinalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) on Wednesday.

Out of 181 total nominees from all divisions of college football, Carroll is one of 33 nominees from NCAA Division III programs.

Student-athletes who are eligible for the honor must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility; have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor; and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

The 12 to 14 finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as members of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class on Nov. 1. The winner of the 28th annual William V. Campbell Trophy will be revealed on Dec. 5.

Carroll is in his senior season as the starting running back for the Maroons. He is a three-time First Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) and a two-time First Team All-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) recipient. He entered the 2017 season ranked fourth in school history with 2,730 career rushing yards.

Carroll is on track to graduate in 2018 with a degree in economics. He was picked as a 2016 Second Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. Carroll has been named to the UChicago Dean's List three times and to the UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team twice.
