Chicago Captures 28-7 Victory at Illinois College

From University of Chicago Athletics

Chandler Carroll rushed for two scores and Campbell Garrett threw two touchdowns to lead the University of Chicago football team to a 28-7 road victory at Illinois College Saturday in a Midwest Conference cross-divisional game.

The Maroons (1-2) captured their first victory of the season, while the Blueboys dropped to 0-3.

Carroll compiled his best game of the year on the ground, as the senior running back finished the contest with 142 yards on 31 rushes to average 4.6 yards per carry. He gave the Maroons the early lead in the first quarter, rushing 13 yards for his second touchdown of the season to complete a nine-play, 75-yard drive by the UChicago offense that gave the visitors a 7-0 lead at the 2:24 mark.

Garrett, the freshman quarterback, would later give his team a 14-0 advantage early in the second frame with a 16-yard strike to sophomore Dante Nepa, who finished the game as the Maroons' top receiver with four catches for 72 yards.

UChicago -- who scored in every quarter Saturday -- added another touchdown at the 5:43 mark in the third quarter when Carroll sprung for a 17-yard scamper to give the Maroons a 21-0 lead. The last score for UChicago came on a 42-yard bomb from Garrett to senior Jamie Rieger, who hauled in his first reception touchdown of the year with 11:18 left in the fourth quarter after Illinois College missed a 52-yard field goal attempt.

The Maroons defense was stellar all game, holding IC scoreless until 9:07 to play when Blueboys' quarterback Drew Chance hit Kyle Obertino for a 10-yard touchdown to give the game its final score. UChicago held Illinois College to just nine first downs and 182 yards -- including just 59 yards on the ground -- while totaling 405 offensive yards that broke nearly even in passing (203) and rushing (202).

The Maroons made good on 9-of-18 third-down conversions and converted on all three of their red zone chances, plus nearly doubled the Blueboys in time of possession, 39:44 to 20:16.

Ryan Montgomery finished with 10 tackles, Jackson Ross had seven tackles and a sack -- including two tackles for loss -- and Bill Rotnicki added six tackles to lead the UChicago defense.

For the game, Garrett completed 17-of-24 passes with two touchdowns and three interceptions, compared IC's Drew Chance who went 17-of-32 for 123 yards and a touchdown. Trevor Anderson hauled in four catches for 31 yards and Matt Galloway added three catches for 34 yards to round out the receiving leaders.
