Three New Assistants Join Rochester Staff

Head football coach Chad Martinovich has begun to fill out his inaugural coaching staff at the University of Rochester after hiring three new assistant coaches for the spring of 2018.
 
Martinovich has retained coaches Connor Johnson and Anthony Shakir from the 2017 football staff while also hiring Adam Griggs, Chris Sapp and Randi Moore who will also take part in their first football season on the River Campus in 2018.
 
Johnson has been with Rochester for three seasons, where he has spent time coaching defensive backs and quarterbacks.  He coached one All-Liberty League DB in 2015.  For the upcoming season, Johnson will shift his focus to coaching wide receivers while also being co-special teams coordinator.
 
He was a graduate of the College at Brockport where he earned three letters on the gridiron for the Golden Eagles.
 
Shakir is still in his first year with UR, joining the football staff in the fall of 2017, when he coached the Rochester linebackers, including one All-Liberty League honoree.  He enjoyed a successful playing career at Division II Brevard College, starting all four years at outside linebacker and was named a team captain as a senior in 2013.  In 2018, Shakir will coach the defensive line.
 
Griggs joins the Rochester football staff and will serve as UR's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
 
He comes to the University after spending last season as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he worked under Martinovich.
 
Prior to coaching at MIT, Griggs had multiple coaching stints at Bentley University and Assumption College.
 
A three-year starter and four-year letter winner for Bentley, Griggs was a two-time All-Northeast 10 offensive lineman, earning 1st Team accolades in 2004, when he also earned All-New England regional honors.  Griggs also exceled in the classroom, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2003.
 
He graduated from Bentley University in 2006 with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Design and Corporate Communication.  Griggs was named the Bentley Student Athlete of the Year in 2004 and 2006.
 
Sapp has been named defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Yellowjackets.
 
He had previously spent the last six years at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.  During his time with the Polar Bears, he served as special teams coordinator, defensive backs coach, running backs coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
 
Prior to coaching at Bowdoin, Sapp was a defensive graduate assistant at Middle Tennessee State University where he helped coach two future NFL players.
 
From 2006-10, Sapp coached at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, assisting with wide receivers and returners.  He and Martinovich were at RPI for four seasons together.  Sapp also spent time at Division I Clemson University where he was an administrative assistant for football operations during the 2005-06 season.
 
Sapp attended North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina where he was a three-year starter and two-time captain for the Crusaders.  He graduated from NGU with a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management and minored in Business Administration in 2005.
 
He also earned a Master's Degree in Human and Health Performance from Middle Tennessee State University in 2011.

Moore joins the University of Rochester football coaching staff as co-special teams coordinator and linebackers coach.
 
Moore has previously worked at Lock Haven University as assistant football coach for the past four years.  While with the Bald Eagles, Moore worked as defensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, linebackers coach and defensive backs coach.  He also was Lock Haven's camp director and Director of Campus Operations.
 
At Lock Haven, he coached two All-Americans and six All-Conference players.
 
Prior to his stint at Lock Haven, Moore coached at Allegheny College (2013-14), LIU-Post (2007-13) and was JV Head Coach and varsity defensive coordinator at Holy Cross High School in Queens, NY (2003-07).
 
Moore attended Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus and played football for the Pioneers.  He was a three-year starter at strong safety.  He graduated with an Elementary Education degree in 2003.
