From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
Three Carnegie Mellon University athletes have been honored by
the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on the
Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team for both the men and
the women with two being honored for the second straight
year. Senior tennis athlete Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach,
Calif./Ocean View) is joined by senior golfer Ian Bangor (Moon
Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) on the first team while sophomore
Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) found a spot
on the second team.
Cecil, one of two repeat selections on this year’s
All-America First Team, finished her senior year for the Tartans
with a singles record of 13-2 while carrying a 4.0 GPA with a major
in biological sciences with a neuroscience tract. The senior
earned her second straight NCAA Elite 89 Award for women's tennis
which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest
cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for
each of the NCAA's 89 championships. She ended her three-year
career with the Tartans winning 48 singles matches and 44 doubles
matches after transferring from Tulane University.
Additionally this season, Cecil earned All-University Athletic
Association (UAA) First Team at No. 3 singles for her unbeaten
performance during the Tartans run to second place at the UAA
Championship.
Bangor, a 2013 second team honoree and business administration
major with a 3.85 GPA, finished with a 75.2 stroke average this
past season, with an event win, three top-three and seven top-10
finishes. It marked the fourth straight season he led the
team in scoring average. Bangor was a 2013 PING All-American and
NCAA Championships competitor, he earned All-University Athletic
Association honors twice, finished with a 75.2 career stroke
average and is the school’s all-time wins leader with 10 in
his career. The senior is a four-time PING Mid-Atlantic Region Team
member and two-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
Cecil and Bangor were recently inducted into Carnegie Mellon
University’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Alla is a civil and environmental engineering major with a minor in
business administration and currently carries a 3.85 GPA. The
sophomore won the USTA/ITA National Small College Singles
Championship in October, earning All-America honors. He helped lead
the Tartans to the program's first-ever appearance in the
University Athletic Association Championship title match and sixth
visit to the NCAA tournament. He ended the season with a singles
record of 25-9 while advancing to the round of 16 at the 2014 NCAA
Division III Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships,
earning All-America honors for the spring. For his career, Alla has
amassed a singles record of 42-15, earned UAA Athlete of the Week
four times with three coming in 2013-14 and was named the 2013 ITA
Atlantic South Rookie of the Year and an ITA Scholar Athlete.
